Paris and Hamburg – December 7, 2009 – The latest edition of the international « World Leaders » barometer shows that the decrease of Barack OBAMA’s popularity in the United-States is not seen in Europe where he is still extremely popular. Angela MERKEL continues to move up in popularity and is ahead amongst the European leaders.

Many Europeans, Especially in Britain, Have Lost Confidence in Their Elected Representatives

Rochester and Hamburg – June 17, 2009 –
A new Financial Times/Harris Poll finds that many Europeans say they have less confidence in their own elected representatives (their members of parliament, deputies, etc.) than they did a year ago. Only tiny minorities of people under 64 (those over 65 were not surveyed) in the five largest countries in Europe believe that their elected legislators provide “good value for money.” Americans are very critical of their members of Congress, but on some questions they are much less hostile than people in Europe.

Paris and Hamburg – June 2, 2009 –
The latest edition of the international « World Leaders » barometer, conducted by market research agency Harris Interactive exclusively for FRANCE 24 and the International Herald Tribune, shows that Barack Obama is still at the top of this ranking, as much in terms of popularity as influence. Pope Benedict XVI, whose popularity had decreased in the previous edition, continues to decrease, especially in France where the drop is impressive.

Germans, French and Spanish Adults Oppose Working Past Retirement Age for Larger Pensions While American, British and Italian Adults Support Idea

Rochester and Hamburg – May 27, 2009 –
As the economic crisis continues around the globe, adults in the five largest European countries and the U.S. have different ideas about what it will mean for their retirement and their pensions or retirement savings. Seven in ten Germans (71%) and majorities of French (54%) and Spanish (53%) adults would oppose the idea of working beyond the current state pension/social security age to receive a larger pension while two-thirds of Americans (66%), three in five Britons (61%) and Italians (59%) would support such this idea.

Six-Country Financial Times/Harris Poll Shows How badly Economic Crisis Has Hurt Reputation of Business Leaders

Rochester and Hamburg – April 15, 2009 –
A majority of adults in all six countries say their opinion towards business leaders has worsened as a result of the current economic situation. Only a very small minority say they now view business leaders in a more favourable light. The biggest impact appears to have been in Germany, where three-quarters (75%) claim their opinion has worsened, while in Italy two in five say their opinion of business leaders has stayed the same.

A new Financial Times/Harris Poll finds a lack of consensus in the United States and the largest European countries as to whether their governments should adopt protectionist and nationalistic economic policies or continue more internationalist and liberal economic policies.

Most People in USA and Largest European Countries Oppose Bailouts of Banks, Insurance Companies and Car Manufacturers

Rochester and Hamburg – March 18, 2009 –
A new multinational Financial Times/Harris Poll finds that most Americans and Europeans in most of the five largest European countries are opposed to their governments using their taxpayers’ money to bail out banks, insurance companies and car manufacturers. However, majorities in the United States (51%), Britain (56%), France (65%), and Germany (55%) support government bailouts of the construction industry.

Large Majorities in Five Largest European Countries and the U.S. Support Increased Government Regulation of Business Activities and of Commercial Banks

Rochester and Hamburg – February 25, 2009 –
As the economic crisis continues, at least two-thirds of adults in the United States and the five largest European countries (between 66% and 79%) support increased regulation by their governments’ business activities to prevent future financial global market crises. In Great Britain, France, Spain, Germany and the United States this support for increased regulation has increased since October while in Italy it has held steady.

Paris and Hamburg – February 6, 2009 –
The second edition of the international “World Leaders” barometer, conducted by the market research company Harris Interactive for FRANCE 24 and the International Herald Tribune, shows Barack Obama is at the top of the list, with particularly high results among all of the 6 surveyed populations. Respondents approve by a large majority of Barack Obama, putting him in first place in terms of popularity, closely followed by the Dalai Lama then Angela Merkel.

European Reactions to President Obama Overwhelmingly Positive

Opinion polls in the United States have reported the overwhelmingly optimistic and positive feelings of the American people toward President Barack Obama. A new Financial Times/Harris Poll finds that he is even more popular in the five largest European countries than in the United States.
