December Financial Times/Harris Poll Monthly Opinions of Adults from Five European Countries and the United States

Rochester and Hamburg – Dezember 21, 2008 –
The economic times have hit the holidays as less than 15% in all 6 countries say they will be spending more this year than last year. Majorities in Germany and Spain and just under half of Britons say they will be spending about the same as last year while over half of Italians and just under half of Americans and French adults say they will be spending less than last year.

"World Leaders" Opinion Barometer

Paris and Hamburg – November 28, 2008 –
Of 19 worldwide leaders presented, The DALAI LAMA, Angela MERKEL and Tony BLAIR are most popular among the citizens of the 6 countries surveyed. This first edition of the International « World Leaders » Barometer conducted by the market research company Harris Interactive for FRANCE 24 and the International Herald Tribune demonstrates a distinct hierarchy between the worldwide leaders and also shows important gaps across countries.

November Financial Times/Harris Poll Monthly Opinions of Adults from Five European Countries and the United States

Rochester and Hamburg – November 16, 2008 –
Majorities of adults in the US, Spain, Italy and Great Britain all say that the performance of their country’s government in handling the global financial market crisis is poor. Adults in France and Germany are a little more positive as just one-third of Germans and just under two in five French adults all say their government’s handling of the crisis is poor, but just under one-quarter in both countries also say it is good – the highest of all six countries.

When it comes to the stock holders demanding higher rates of return, feelings are mixed on how much responsibility they have in causing today’s global financial crisis. A plurality of Americans and just over one-third of Spaniards give them some responsibility, while a plurality of Italians and over one-third of Britons, French, and Germans all give them a lot of responsibility.

September Financial Times/Harris Poll on Russia and Foreign Policy

Rochester and Hamburg – September 25, 2008 –
At least one-third of adults in all six countries say Russia’s recent actions regarding Georgia were extremely or very threatening, with almost half of Italian adults saying this. Conversely, Italians are also more likely than the other countries to say it is not at all threatening.

Financial Times/Harris Poll on the Economy and Voting

Rochester and Hamburg – August 28, 2008 –
Looking at the economy of the countries, almost nine in ten adults in Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain and the U.S. all say their country’s economy has got worse in the past year. Six in ten Italians say it has got much worse. Germany is the stand-out as just over half of Germans say the economy has got worse while one-quarter say it has remained about the same and 16%, the highest by far of all 6 countries, say it has got better.

Over half of Germans and over one-third of French and British adults rent or lease their primary residence. A plurality of Americans and over one-third of Spaniards own their primary residence with a mortgage while just under one-third of Italians own with no mortgage.

Financial Times/Harris Poll on Finances and The Economy

Rochester and Hamburg – April 14, 2008 –
Looking at the financial markets and the credit crisis, Italy seems to be the hardest hit followed by Spain and the United States according to respondents. While over one-third of French adults say the crisis has had a major or moderate impact on their daily life, over one-third also say it has had no impact. Germany and Great Britain appear to be the best off financially as pluralities in both countries say the crisis has had no impact on their daily lives.

LONDON and ROCHESTER, NY – March 10, 2008 –
Over three quarters of adults in France, Italy and Spain agree that the EU needs a high profile figure to represent it. In fact, over half of Italians and Spaniards completely agree with that sentiment. Just half of British adults believe this while Germany is more divided, but leaning towards disagreeing.

Financial Times / Harris Poll: Majorities in Five European Countries and the U.S. Believe Russia is an Unreliable Energy Supplier

LONDON and ROCHESTER, NY – February 20, 2008 –
While the Cold War may be over, this does not mean those in the five largest European countries and the U.S. are willing to trust Russia as an energy supplier. In fact, majorities in Italy (54%), Germany (59%), Spain (69%), Great Britain (70%), the U.S. (70%), and France (71%) say they regard Russia as an unreliable energy supplier.
